Facial Brown Spots Causes, Prevention and Treatments Part 2 - Treatment of Melasma The most popular treatment for melasma is the use of creams which contain hydroquinone as well as other combination formulas with retinoids and low potency corticosteroids. The US Food and Drug Administration has approved such a triple-combination cream which has been shown to be safe and effective in multiple melasma trials. Of course, sun avoidance and the liberal use of sunscreens with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher is highly recommended as an additional measure when treating pigmentation disorders. Procedures such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser and light therapies have also been used to treat melasma, but these treatments present a risk for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation which can make the pigmentation problems worse, especially in ethnic skin. It has been shown that some of these procedures in combination with daily use of topical creams has resulted in a more rapid and significant improvements than using the creams alone.
