Part 3: Causes and Treatments of Sun Spots

Solar lentigines, also known as "sun spots" or "liver spots" are light brown to dark brown patches which appear on chronically over exposed skin of the face, shoulders, back, forearms and hands. This pigment disorder affects 90% of white individuals by age 60.

The most important preventative measure is liberal application of physical sun blockers containing titanium dioxide or zinc oxide with an SPF of 15 or higher.

This pigmentation disorder responds well to creams or solutions containing hydroquinone, retinoids, mequinol and kojic acid.

Common procedures used to treat solar lentigines include cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen), chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser and light therapies. Combination therapies using the topical creams and one of the above procedures have shown to hasten resolution.
