PART 2According to one human study, regular application of skin care products containing antioxidants may be of the utmost benefit, especially in combination with sunscreen, against the damaging effects of the sun. Other antioxidants The benefits of antioxidants go far beyond their effects on keeping the skin healthy. It has been suggested that consumption of antioxidants can play a role in prevention of cancer, cardiovascular disease, cataracts and brain dysfunction. Here is a list of other antioxidants and where they can be found: Caratenoids: Lycopene Lycopene is a pigment that gives vegetables and fruits, such as tomatoes, pink grapefruit and watermelon, their red color. It is reported to have protective effects against many types of cancer, including prostate, digestive tract, breast, lung and cervical. Lycopene is one of the most potent antioxidants. Lycopene is better absorbed by the body 3 times more when consumed as processed tomatoe products, rather than fresh tomatoes. Spaghetti sauce, tomato juice, ketchup and pizza sauce provide over 80% of the lycopene consumed in the U.S. Lutein Lutein is a carotenoid which is correlated to a reduced risk of age related macular degeneration. Lutein is most abundant in kale, broccoli, spinach, collard greens, and egg yolk. Beta-carotene Beta-carotene is found in carrots and is the precursor of Vitamin A. It is also found in liver, egg yolk, milk, butter, spinach, carrots, squash, broccoli, yams, tomato, cantaloupe, peaches and grains. Other foods with antioxidant properties include, red wine, cocoa and honey.
![]() Role of exercise Studies involving athletes have shown that regular physical exercise enhances the antioxidant defense system. On the other hand, intense exercise in untrained individuals overwhelms defenses resulting in increased free radical damage. Therefore, someone who is sedentary during the week, should avoid engaging in vigorous bouts of exercise during the weekend as they may be doing more harm than good.
