No one is safe from skin cancer

Fair-skinned people who sunburn easily are at a particularly high risk for developing skin cancer. The incidence of skin cancer is higher in those with blond or red hair, those who have light-colored eyes, and those who are prone to sunburn.

However, no one is safe from skin cancer. Almost half of all Americans who live to age 65 will be diagnosed with skin cancer at some point in their lives, according to the National Cancer Institute.

By preventing the physical act of frowning, Botox may ease depression.

A small-scale trial, published in the May 15 journal of Dermatologic Surgery, found that Botox injected into facial frown lines of 10 women eliminated depression symptoms in nine of them and reduced symptoms in the 10th.

The theory behind the study is based on the psycholgical fact that the mere act of smiling makes people feel better, while frowns make them feel worse. Botox, by preventing the physical act of frowning, just might ease depression.

While this seems far fetched, scientists have already proven that facial expressions can alter heart rate, skin temperature and blood volume.

It is currently not prooven that Botox is an effective treatment for depression, but this study is a promising new hope for the 10-25% of women and 5-10% of men who at some time in their lives suffer from depression (American Psychiatric Assn.).
