PART 3 - SKIN CANCER PREVENTION

Exposure to sunlight is the major contributing factor to developing skin cancer. In particular, blistering sunburns in childhood and adolescence significantly increase the risk of developing malignant melanoma.

Most skin cancers can be prevented by practicing sun protection. Even if you already have spent a lot of time in the sun or developed skin cancer at some point in your life, it's never too late to begin protecting your skin.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends the following sun protection practices:

  • Avoid deliberate tanning. Tanning, whether it is in the sun or under tanning beds, will not only result in developing skin cancer, it will also cause premature aging of the skin. The UV rays further weaken the body's immune system, cause cataracts as well as macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of blindness in people age 65 and older.

  • Always wear protective clothing. Wear long sleeve shirts, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.

  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily that protects against both UVA and UVB with SPF of at least 15, even on cloudy days. Don't forget to apply sunscreen on your ears, nose, hands, toes and lips.

  • Apply sunscreen to dry skin 15-30 minutes before going outdoors. Reapply every two hours, especially after being in water or sweating.

  • Seek shade whenever possible, especially between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Some UV rays get through even the most protective sunscreens, so the best protection against skin cancer is to limit direct sun exposure as much as possible.
