Part 1 - Causes of Melasma

Melasma is characterized by irregularly shaped tan to dark brown patches which occur on the upper lip, nose, cheeks, chin, forehead and neck. It is most common among women of childbearing age, although 10% of patients seeking treatment are men.

The exact cause of melasma is still unknown, however some of the contributing factors are genetic predisposition, hormonal shifts, and chronic overexposure to the sun. Women who are pregnant or taking oral contraceptives also have a high incidence of melasma, this explains why it is commonly referred to as “the mask of pregnancy”.
